How to Care for Encore Azalea Autumn Sunburst
Sunlight: This azalea prefers full sun to partial shade. Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Soil: Plant it in well-drained, acidic soil. A pH of 5.5 ideal. Incorporate organic matter like peat moss to improve soil structure and acidity.
Water: Ensure consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Water deeply but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. Mulching around the base of the plant can help retain soil moisture.
Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, acidic fertilizer specifically formulated for azaleas in early spring. Avoid fertilizing late in the season, as it can encourage new growth that may not harden off before winter.
Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering to shape the plant and remove dead or weak branches. Avoid pruning in late summer or fall, as this can stimulate new growth that may not be hardy.
Winter Protection: In colder climates, protect the plant from harsh winter conditions by wrapping it with burlap or frost blankets. Mulching around the base can also help insulate the roots.
Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common azalea pests like aphids, scale insects, and spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Azaleas are susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew and leaf spot. Avoid overhead watering and ensure good air circulation to prevent these problems.

Encore® Azalea Autumn Sunburst™ will grow to be about 3 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 4 feet. It tends to be a little leggy, with a typical clearance of 1 foot from the ground. It grows at a slow rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for 40 years or more. This shrub does best in full sun to partial shade. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth, but will die in standing water. It is very fussy about its soil conditions and must have rich, acidic soils to ensure success, and is subject to chlorosis (yellowing) of the leaves in alkaline soils. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution, and will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location. Consider applying a thick mulch around the root zone in winter to protect it in exposed locations or colder microclimates. This particular variety is an interspecific hybrid.
