Kaleidoscope Abelia
Give your garden a colorful addition with Kaleidoscope Abelia. This impressive shrub has brilliant variegated foliage with shades of yellow and dark green. The gift of this summer shrub are the clusters of late summer blooms of white bell-shaped flowers that burst from pink buds.
In the fall, this gorgeous plant shines in a myriad of yellows, greens, and reds. It is resistant to leaf fade and scorch. Kaleidoscope Abelia has a mounding habit and grows best in full sun to partial shade. It does best in average to evenly moist, well-draining soil, and it will not tolerate standing water.
Enhance your landscape with this full and slow-growing shrub. It will grow to be about 30 inches tall with about a 4 ft spread at maturity. Planting for pollinators? This summer shrub is a great choice for attracting birds, bees, and butterflies to your yard.
Red Yucca
Looking for the perfect garden accent to fill that sunny spot in your landscape? Try planting Red Yucca! This stately shrub comes from the succulent family with arching grassy-looking foliage and tall spikes of red blooms. In the fall, the foliage turns copper/bronze in hue. Red Yucca adds a fine and delicate texture and a dynamic component to your landscape.
The beauty of this summer shrub is its drought tolerance, making it an exceptional choice for our Texas climate. It prefers dry to average moisture levels and a well-draining soil. Red Yucca will not tolerate standing water. Red Yucca will grow to be about 4 ft tall with blooms and about a 3 ft spread. Plus, you can enjoy the added benefit of attracting beneficial pollinators to your landscape like hummingbirds.
Texas Sage
Texas Sage will make a gorgeous addition to any landscape. Perfect for the summer, Texas Sage tolerates heat, drought, and even poor soil conditions. The greenish-gray to silvery foliage, depending on the variety, adds a nice contrast to other landscape plantings.
Watch as it sparkles with small pink/purple flowers. Texas Sage grows best in full sun and will require regular watering until it is established. It will grow to be about 3-5 ft tall with a 3-5 ft spread.
Silver Star Texas Sage has silver foliage with pink blooms and the Green Cloud Texas Sage has grey-green foliage with a profusion of purple blooms.
Crapemyrtles
Crapemyrtles are stunning ornamental shrubs that create a captivating focal point in your landscape. Crapemyrtles grow boldly with green foliage and glossy leaves. They are blanketed by frilly flowers in shades of white, red, pink, and lavender. Plus, great for growing in full sun, they are highly resistant to powdery mildew and are drought tolerant.
Pink Velour Crapemyrtles are small trees covered in bright pink flowers, contrasted by the burgundy foliage. It will grow to be about 10-15 ft tall with a 8-12 ft spread.
Natchez Crapemyrtles feature white summer blooms against glossy green foliage that turns orange and red in the fall. This small tree grows vigorously and can reach 20 ft tall with a 10-15 ft spread at maturity.
Cherry Dazzle Crapemyrtles will provide a dazzling show of color with bronze foliage that matures to dark green and masses of red blooms. In the fall, the foliage changes to a vibrant reddish-purple hue. It will grow to be 3 ft tall and 5 ft wide.
Enduring Summer Lavender Crapemyrtles provide a summer of color with clusters of lavender blooms against the glossy, green foliage. This medium sized shrub will grow to be about 4-5 ft tall and wide with a compact growing habit.
Baby Gem™ Boxwood
Baby Gem™ Boxwoods are an extremely versatile shrub and it is ideal for small and formal landscapes. Compact and dense, Baby Gem™ Boxwoods can grow to reach 4 ft tall to 4-5 ft wide. The green foliage features small and glossy oval leaves that turn chartreuse in color in the spring and will remain green well into the winter.
It is drought tolerant, making it a great choice for your Texas landscape, and does best in full sun to partial shade. Baby Gem™ Boxwoods prefer average to moist soil conditions and should be allowed to dry out.
How to Properly Plant Shrubs
- First, it is very important to properly prep the native soil before planting. To start, always be safe! Have the city come out to label where gas and water lines are in your garden, and check for rocks and debris in your planting area.
- Next, start tilling to gently loosen the surrounding soil. This will help break up the clay in the soil and create air pockets for healthy root growth. Then, add the proper soil amendments like Calloway’s Premium Tree & Shrub Garden Soil. Repeat the tilling process and begin planting!
- After you finish prepping the soil, it is time to dig a hole for the tree or shrub. Digging enough space so the planting hole is twice the size of the root ball and same depth.
- Mix in equal parts of the Calloway’s Premium Tree & Shrub Garden Soil with the native soil. Remove the shrub from its container and gently loosen up the root ball. Place the plant in the planting hole and press the soil around the plant to secure your plant.
- Cover everything to the top of the root with a layer of mulch and water in thoroughly, saturating the root ball and surrounding soil. Keep your newly planted shrubs well-watered.
