How to Care for a Tillandsia Air Plant
Light: Air plants prefer bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch their foliage. A spot near a window that receives filtered light is ideal.
Water: Air plants absorb water and nutrients through their leaves. Mist them thoroughly with water once or twice a week, ensuring the water reaches all parts of the plant. Alternatively, soak the plant in lukewarm water for 20-30 minutes weekly and make sure to allow it to air dry completely.
Humidity: Air plants prefer high humidity. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water.
Fertilizer: Fertilize air plants with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
Repotting: Air plants don’t require repotting in traditional soil. If they become too large or heavy, you can secure them to a new mount or display piece.
Pests and Diseases: Air plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for mealybugs or scale insects. If you notice pests, treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Blooming: Air plants bloom once in their lifetime. After blooming, the mother plant may produce offsets (pups) that can be detached and grown into new plants.
