Entertaining in our homes is a wonderful tradition of the Christmas season. We all look forward to warm hugs and long chats around the fireplace. The Christmas tree is decorated and all lit up. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care. The air is rich with the smell of baked cookies, and Christmas carols play softly in the background. The front porch is all aglow. A fragrant, fresh wreath adorns the door with a graceful garland draped above it. You’ve made your list and checked it twice – everything is in its place, and it is picture perfect.
It’s time to remove your summer annuals and include Matrix® Pansies in your containers and flowerbeds, it is so rewarding because they bloom over and over again. They also stand up to the changes in our Texas weather. Here’s a handy tip if you’re new to the area or gardening – Matrix® Pansies are a must!
Welcoming friends and family into our homes actually begins when they drive up to your home. The house is lit with lights strung all around, the lawn is glowing, and your flowerbeds sparkle with bright, happy blooms to greet them. At Calloway’s and Cornelius Nursery, we are here to help make those first impressions more memorable than ever. Matrix® Pansies are just what your flowerbeds and containers need to complete the look. Why settle for empty flowerbeds during the winter when these beauties can bring so much life to your garden?
The Calloway’s family loves Matrix® Pansies for all their amazing qualities: their bigger than life blooms, sturdy stems that aptly support those large flowers, vibrant color selection and their staying power. Matrix® Pansies love the cooler temperatures and with a bit of mulch, you’ll be surprised to see how well they bounce back after a frost. Adding Calloway’s Premium Mulch to any garden area will make it appear more polished and finished. In addition to looking great, it also helps the soil retain moisture and protects roots by moderating the soil temperature. It is easy to spread and has so many benefits. Your pansies will also welcome regular feedings each month. Creating all those blooms takes a lot of energy, so it is important to replace the nutrients with Calloway’s Premium Flower Food since it is specially formulated for our Texas soils and blooming plants like Pansies.
To keep you fascinated about Matrix® Pansies, we’d like to share a little trivia with you. The more you know about this amazing bloomer, the more you will love it.
Pansies got their start in Europe and Western Asia. They were first cultivated in the early 19th century.
Pansies have come to symbolize love, remembrance, and affectionate thoughts. Their name comes from the French word “pensée,” which means “thought”. This is just another great reason to have them in your flowerbeds and containers during the holiday season.
Pansies are the birth flower for those born in February.
Their colors are enchanting and include bold shades such as blue, purple, and yellow. They also bloom in softer shades of these same colors. There is also a lovely white bloom with a single dot of yellow at the center.
You may have already noticed that some Pansies are a solid color, while others have a mixture of colors. “Clear” and “blotched” are the terms used to describe the difference between these blooms.
Blotch Pansies feature a dark center, sometimes referred to as “faces.” They are excellent for creating a dramatic display in your flowerbeds or containers. Clear pansies are one solid color with no markings. Clear or blotched, they will add a splash of color everywhere. You’ll especially enjoy them when planted closely together to create a carpet of dazzling color.
You can use the leaves and flowers to garnish cakes, salads, soups, and desserts. Your holiday gatherings will be unique when you add this creative garnish to your dishes!
You’ve added thoughtful touches everywhere – from your holiday décor to the flowerbeds. Give your guests one last memory of your time together. As you are seeing them off, take the place card from each place setting and surprise everyone with their own tiny Poinsettia. No other plant symbolizes Christmas quite like the poinsettia. These darling little plants are self-watering too, thanks to a small wick at the bottom that draws up the water.
And now that your flowerbeds are brimming with color, go ahead and invite everyone over – you are ready!
