Painting Techniques to Prep Your Pottery

terra cotta pottery

At Calloway’s and Cornelius, we have a wide variety of clay pots and ceramics ideal for all your favorite seasonal plants. Terra Cotta Pottery enhances the natural beauty of any indoor or outdoor garden, and it is extremely versatile. It is great for painting, personalizing, and most importantly, planting. Terra Cotta is an ancient and versatile material. The name ‘Terra Cotta’ comes from the Latin term ‘baked Earth’. The porous material is ideal for planting because it allows air to penetrate the soil and roots and excess water to evaporate.

pottery with primer

Before you paint the town pink, it is important to prepare your Terra Cotta Pottery. Since it is a porous material, it is ideal to prime your clay pots with white paint or white primer. This will allow your paint colors to shine brightly while also saving you time during the application process.

For this DIY craft, we used primer spray paint to evenly cover and coat our pottery. The matte finish from the paint primer is the ideal canvas for any artistic project.

Allow everything to dry completely before beginning your pottery painting.

Pattern Designs for Your Pink Pottery

TWO-TONE PINK POTTERY

two-tone painted pink pottery

Two-tone Terra Cotta Pottery makes a timeless statement that will stay stylish all year long. It’s an easy craft for kids and the color combinations are endless.

Step One:

paint pink

First, start with your main paint color. Paint the top or bottom portion of your clay pot, leaving room for the color. Allow the paint to dry and add 1-2 more coats of paint for good coverage.

Step Two:

paint light pink

Next, paint the remaining white areas with light pink paint. Use glossy pink craft paint or try metallic paint for a fancy touch. You can also incorporate other colors like black or gold to match your home décor.

paint terra cotta saucer

Compliment your two-toned planters with matching Terra Cotta Saucers. Saucers catch water or soil that comes out of the drain hole to better protect your furniture when your plants are on display.

Step Three:

bromeliad

When the paint has dried completely, it is time to start planting! Try stunning houseplants with pink blooms and unique patterns.

Bromeliads are a fantastic choice for your two-tone pink pottery.  They are stunning, low-maintenance indoor plants that provide an exotic flair with long-lasting color. They prefer bright, indirect light indoors and can adapt easily to various conditions.

calathea

Color Full™ Beauty Star is a Calathea ornata from Proven Winners® leafjoy™ and adds the perfect blend of pink and green. The glossy foliage has gorgeous pink stripes that will add color, texture, and design to your pink-a-licious collection. Native to Brazil, Calathea prefers warm and humid indoor environments with bright, indirect light.

FLOWER-POWER PINK POTTERY

Enhance your decorative pottery with flower power. With a few simple brush strokes, you can create a darling design that will make your dreams come true!

Step One:

painting terra cotta pottery pink

First, paint your clay pots pink. Cover the whole planter in one shade of pink and apply 1-2 more coats of paint for coverage.

Step Two:

painting flowers on terra cotta pottery

Once your Terra Cotta Pottery is fully pink-ified, add a white flower pattern to your design. Using a round-tip paintbrush, create each flower petal one at a time. Try to space each flower and row equally and continue the pattern all the way around your pink pottery.

adding center to flowers

Once that has dried, paint the center of the flowers. We used light pink paint to maintain the pretty-in-pink color scheme.

Step Three:

succulent plants

Pair your flower planter with the low-maintenance beauty of Succulents. Ideal for indoor gardening, these desert-based plants require minimal watering and should only be watered when the soil is completely dry. Succulent plants are gifted with the ability to store water in their leaves, so they can use it during dry periods. They need bright, indirect light for a few hours a day.

Complete the look of your flower-painted pottery with Exotic Décor Pebbles and allow the succulents to be the focal point of your creation.

SPARKLING PINK POTTERY

Glitter and shine with sparking pink pottery! This family craft also makes for a fun DIY gift. It is quick and easy, and it will add that extra pizzazz to your next celebration.

Step One:

pink pottery

Start by painting your Terra Cotta Pottery. Try a different painting technique and use spray paint for a faster application. Choose a glossy finish for extra glamour and always use spray paint under adult supervision.

Step Two:

mod modge and glitter

When the spray paint is dry and no longer sticky, adorn it with glitz and glitter. Paint the bottom half of your Terra Cotta Pottery with Mod Podge®.

paint glue on pottery

Once that is applied, sprinkle glitter over the wet Mod Podge® until everything is covered.

adding glitter to painted pottery

Allow your pink pottery to dry completely before you start planting. Feel free to add a protective sealant to further prevent the glitter from shedding.

Step Three:

indoor gardening

Fill your glitter pink pottery with gorgeous indoor color. Try Kalanchoe for its beautiful pink blooms and easy care. Did you know Kalanchoes are flowering succulents? They have the same thick leaves, but they are prized for their bright clusters of long-lasting flowers.

polka dot splash

Splash Select Pink Polka Dot Plant is another great choice for jazzing up your indoor plant décor. Also known as the Freckled Face Plant, this indoor foliage is attractive and colorful. It has glossy green leaves that are speckled with bright shades of pink, white, and red.
