How To Make Candy Heart Planters
Plant love with creative expressions and crafty decorations. Candy Heart Planters are unique gifts that keep on giving. They are fantastic teacher gifts, great for co-workers and neighbors, and they will add an adorable touch to your Galentine’s festivities.
SUPPLIES:
- Terra Cotta Pottery
- Valentine’s-Themed Plants
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- Primer
- White Paint
- Candy Heart Stickers or Candy Heart Paper Cut Outs
- Mod Podge®
- Paint Brush
STEP ONE:
First, prepare your terra cotta pottery for painting. Create a clean surface by wiping off any excess dirt and removing any labels.
Paint each flowerpot with primer and give them time to dry. Primer allows the paint to adhere better and last longer.
Once the primer is set, start applying white craft paint to each planter. Use horizontal strokes to elevate your handmade surprise with a personalized touch. Apply 1-2 additional coats for the best results, allowing each one to dry completely.
STEP TWO:
Next, decorate your sweet planters with Candy Heart stickers! Place the stickers around the pot, angling each one differently for a dynamic design.
Use a variety of colors and punny expressions for a smile-worthy arrangement. Use enough stickers on your Valentine’s pots, but try not to overload them to maintain the sweet balance of the white pottery and playful hearts.
If you don’t have access to Candy Heart stickers, we are here to help! Print and cut your own plant-themed Candy Hearts with our free template. Try the full-color template or choose the black-and-white version for a monochromatic look. It’s a great coloring page too! Decorate them with your favorite coloring pencils, markers, glitter, and more.

Once your heartfelt craft is decorated, apply Mod Podge® to adhere and seal the hearts to the planter. Cover each heart and paint the entirety of the flowerpot for added protection. Allow everything to dry before you begin planting.
STEP THREE:
It is time to plant! Complete your sweet décor with seasonal favorites in vibrant shades of red and pink. Fill your planters with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil to provide the optimal environment for healthy continued growth, and then, add your plants.
Here are a few of our favorite plants for Valentine’s Day!
Heart-Shaped Hoya
A heart-shaped Hoya is the ultimate plant for Valentine’s Day! This festive indoor plant is a thick succulent with heart-shaped leaves. Great for beginners, Heart-Shaped Hoya is extremely low maintenance and relatively drought-tolerant. It thrives in bright, indirect light but it can tolerate low light. Water when the soil is dry to the touch, but do not let the soil dry out completely.
Miniature Rose
Gift your sweetheart roses that will last – Miniature Roses! Also known as Kordana® Roses, these adorable blooms are specifically developed, mini roses that come in gorgeous shades of red and pink! The striking blooms mirror a classic rose, just in a tabletop size. They are a great choice for indoor color on Valentine’s Day, and after the holiday, they can be re-planted outdoors.
Miniature Roses prefer bright light or full sun, and they should be watered when the top two inches of the soil is dry.
Pink Polka Dot Plant
Treat your family and friends to a heartfelt creation filled with indoor foliage. Splash Select™ Pink Polka Dot Plant is a charming choice for any Valentine’s Day arrangement.
Also known as the Freckled Face Plant, the glossy green leaves are speckled with bright shades of pink. It prefers brightly lit areas indoors and should be watered when the top of the soil is dry to the touch.
Primrose
For a memorable Valentine’s Day, gift your loved ones the vibrant hues of Primrose. The bold blooms shine with pops of pink and yellow, adding a playful touch to your botanical crafts. Primroses will provide excellent indoor color for your celebration and when they are finished flowering, deadhead the spent blooms and replant them outdoors. They need bright, indirect light indoors and shade outside. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
Kalanchoe
Show your potted affection with the succulent sentiments of Kalanchoes. These popular houseplants are ideal for beginner gardeners because they are drought-tolerant and easy to grow. Kalanchoes have thick succulent leaves with exceptional, long-lasting clusters of blooms. They perform best in bright, indirect sunlight and should be watered regularly. Allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
Mini Cyclamen
Looking for a smaller option? Try Mini Cyclamen! Create heartwarming crafts with these adorable and petite cool-season blooms.
The beautiful leaves have elegant designs of silver and green and the upright blooms sparkle in bright red and pink. Cyclamen thrives in bright, indirect light indoors and the miniature size makes it the ideal Valentine’s Day décor for dorms or office spaces.
