SUPPLIES:
- 1 Large Terra Cotta Pot
- 1 Small Terra Cotta Pot
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- Red, White & Blue Flowers
- Garden Stones
- Dowel Rod
- Ups-A-Daisy® Round Planter Insert
- Red & Blue Matte Craft Paint
- Paint Brush
- Star Stencil
- Painter’s Tape
STEP ONE: PAINT THE STARS
First, remove stickers and wipe off your terra cotta planters to ensure the surface is clean and ready for decorating.
Use a stencil to trace the stars on your large terra cotta pot. Create your shapes by outlining a pre-cut paper star, a foam paper crafting star, or use our FREE Star Stencil template. Simply, print and cut out the shapes for a quick and easy homemade stencil.
Space out the stars, tracing them around your patriotic planter. Use different angles for extra visual appeal.
Fill in each star outline with your favorite blue paint and allow it to dry completely. If the color is too dark on the planter, add a little white paint to help brighten it up.
STEP TWO: ADD THE STRIPES
Next, grab your small terra cotta pot and painter’s tape. Using one piece as the guide for even spacing, tape the stripe pattern around the lip of the planter. This will help you create a clean edge for your stripes.
Paint the exposed areas with red craft paint to create your stripes.
Once you are finished, carefully remove the tape and allow everything to dry.
STEP THREE: BUILD YOUR DIY PATRIOTIC PLANTER
United we stand! Let’s build our patriotic planter. Fill the bottom of the large pot with garden stones or pebbles. The stones will hold the dowel rod in place and help keep everything stable and secure.
Next, place the Ups-A-Daisy® Round Planter Insert above the stones. Ideal for any DIY container garden, this planter insert allows you to use less soil, promotes better drainage, and protects the roots for healthier growth. It also has a convenient hole that is the perfect size for the dowel rod.
Secure the dowel rod into the planter by placing it through the planter insert and into the stones.
Complete your creation by placing the small terra cotta pot on top, make sure the dowel rod is going through the drain hole of your planter to keep it secure. Add some stones to the bottom of the small pot to reinforce the drainage system.
STEP FOUR: PLANT PATRIOTIC FLOWERS
