SUPPLIES
For this project, you will need the following supplies:
- Terra Cotta Pottery
- Fresh herbs and annual color like Geraniums, Matrix® Pansies, Chives, and Thyme
- Calloway’s Organic Container Potting Soil
- Paint/Spray Paint
- Hand Shovel
- Gardening Gloves
- Watering Can
- Popsicle Sticks
- Glue
STEP 1: PAINT YOUR POTTERY
For this activity, we will be making 3 different football-themed containers with your terra cotta pottery! To get started, it is time to paint your pottery! Remember, always use adult supervision when using spray paint.
FOOTBALL FIELD POTTERY
First, paint your pottery green. Apply a few coats until fully covered. Then, paint numbers at the top of the container to mimic a football field.
Add a bold line under each number with paint and add in smaller incremental yard lines.
While your paint is drying, make your field goal post with popsicle sticks.
Glue together your popsicle sticks to make a U-shape and add a stick to the bottom to complete the goal post. Paint gold or the color of your favorite team!
PLAYBOOK POTTERY
First, paint your pottery to resemble a chalk board and allow the paint to dry completely.
Next, paint your winning play on the pottery with X’s and O’s for an old school touch.
FOOTBALL POTTERY
Want to keep it simple? Utilize the terra cotta color of your pottery! Simply, add white laces to the front of your pottery to mimic a football.
After your paint has dried completely, it is time to start planting!
STEP 2: ADD POTTING SOIL
Fill your container with potting soil! For our creations, we are planting fresh edibles like herbs! Try using a natural and organic potting soil like Calloway’s Organic Container Potting Soil. Calloway’s Organic Potting Soil is made from the highest quality organic ingredients. Our Organic Potting Soil contains water saving ingredients like expanded shale and coco coir for added moisture control and beneficial ingredients like silicon, lime, and organic fertilizer to improve overall health and to feed your plant naturally. Additional Organic ingredients include composted rice hulls, pine bark, earthworm castings, and peat moss to add good aeration and organic matter to the soil for rapid root growth.
STEP 3: START PLANTING
FOOTBALL FIELD POTTERY
For your Football Field Pottery, pair it with a grassy-looking plant that is full of flavor like Chives!
Chives do best in full sun to partial shade. They prefer average to evenly moist conditions but will not tolerate standing water. Chives are also a great choice for attracting pollinators like butterflies to your yard!
Add your plants and water in thoroughly until it drains out of the drain hole. Then, complete your Football Field Pottery with your field goal post.
PLAYBOOK POTTERY
Want something a little more colorful? Make your container creation using the “Thriller, Spiller, Filler” method! Use plants with similar sun and water requirements for your gardening success.
For your “Thriller” plant, add a dynamic plant with colorful blooms like Snapdragons! Snapdragons produce tiny clusters of blooms on tall, sturdy stalks and are a great plant for pollinator-friendly gardens! They are best grown in full sun with moist soil conditions.
“Filler” plants are plants that tend to be more rounded or compact to make the container look full. Place your “Filler” in front of your “Thriller” plant. For your “Filler” plant, try Matrix® Pansies!
Matrix® Pansies are known for their large blooms and consistent growth during the cooler season. They come in a variety of bold and vibrant colors in blotch or clear styles. These low-maintenance plants allow for easy care for your garden, containers, and landscape allowing maximum growth with little effort. Matrix® Pansies grow quickly and are best planted in partial shade to full sun.
For your “Spiller” plant, use trailing plants that hang over the edge of the container. They should be planted close to the edge of the container, in front of, or surrounding the “Filler” plant.
Keep your creations tasty and use a trailing herb like Thyme or Rosemary. Fresh herbs require full sunlight and evenly moist soil conditions.
After planting, water in thoroughly until water drains out of the drain hole.
FOOTBALL POTTERY
For a simple and beautiful container garden, try planting a dynamic and bold bloom like Geraniums. Geraniums are known for their unique, upright blooms in rich, vibrant shades. These are a favorite for gardeners for being an easy-to-grow and dynamic addition to flowerbeds and containers.
