HOW TO MAKE AN INDOOR HANGING BASKET

indoor hanging basket

Who says hanging baskets need to be outdoors? Hang out with gorgeous greenery and lush foliage in your family room. When creating your hanging basket, you can choose from any of our indoor plant selections available at Calloway’s and Cornelius. The key to remember for your planting success is to choose varieties that have similar water and light requirements. Some indoor plants need consistently moist soil while plants like succulents and cacti need the soil to dry before watering again.

Indoor Hanging Basket Themes and Soils

You can create your hanging basket based on themes of plants like:

  1. Succulents
  2. Cacti
  3. Ferns
  4. Bromeliads

As long as the light and water requirements match, the choice is yours. Select the proper potting soil for your planting success based on the types of plants that you decide to use for your creation. Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil is a great choice for keeping your plants happy. Our New Premium Container Potting Soil helps your plants get the best start for healthier, continued growth. It helps to improve drought tolerance, delay wilting, and to help increase stem strength for your planting success.

For more drought tolerant plants like succulents, cacti or bromeliads, use Black Gold® Cactus Mix. The unique blend of horticultural grade perlite, pumice, earthworm castings, compost and bark was made specifically for cactuses and succulents! It helps provide the ideal soil structure and drainage for happy, healthy plants!

Creating Your Indoor Hanging Basket

To get started, you will need the following supplies:

  1. Hanging Basket Container
  2. Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil or Black Gold® Cactus Mix
  3. Indoor Plants
  4. Decorative Moss
  5. Small Stones

STEP 1: Add Stones and Soil

potting soil

First, create a proper draining system. Put a layer of stones or pebbles at the bottom of the container, this will help water drain through the soil and help your plant’s roots avoid sitting in water.

Then, add your potting soil based on your plant selections, leaving room for your plants.

STEP 2: Plant Your Indoor Selections

Now, it is time to start planting! We are using succulents, but you can use the plants of your choice based on what is readily available to make a full and beautiful creation!

succulent thriller

Try sticking to the “Thriller, Spiller, Filler” method for an interesting display. For your “Thriller” plant, add a dynamic selection that is tall and upright, and pair with a larger succulent to create a focal point in your hanging basket.

succulent filler

For the “Filler” plants, use medium sized plant selections. These will fill in your creation, making it look more complete while letting the “Thriller” plants shine.

small succulent

Complete your hanging basket with your “Spiller” plant. The ideal “Spiller” plant will vary based on your indoor hanging basket plants. Try a vining plant that will spill over the edge of your container like an ivy or String of Pearls. You can also use a smaller plant to complete the range of sizes in your creation.

Get your plants planted and add more soil if needed. Then, water or spritz your plants with water.

Super Moss® is a great way to complete any container garden with fresh and vibrant color. From mixed varieties to gorgeous green, moss will add extra beauty to your creation. Help maintain moisture in your container by dunking your moss in moisture before adding to your container.

Plants can be fun to play with, especially Air Plants! Air Plants are slow-growing plants that require very little maintenance and care since they can grow virtually anywhere. These make for great plants in terrariums. Mist or dunk 2-3 times a week, more in dry environments. Air Plants require indirect light, or filtered light, for best growing conditions. The world is your oyster when it comes to crafting with Air Plants!

STEP 2: Add Sand and Stones

exotic pebbles

Before you get started, clean your container of any dirt or fingerprints. Then, get creative. Use neon sands and make tight layers, mix up stones and sands, or try an ombre theme.

We created a mix of layers with a subtle blue ombre coloring from the darker blue sand to the teal sand. Make it as dramatic as you want to work with the style of your home.

First, add the blue sand to the bottom of the container. Be sure to cover the drain hole so the sand doesn’t escape.

Then, do a half and half mix of the teal sand with the blue sand for the next layer.

Shake it up and then add on top of the blue sand already in the container.

Next, add the teal sand. We wanted to make something bright and colorful by showing off more of the teal sand.

After the sand is added, top off your creation with stones. The stones will help keep your Air Plant secure in its container.
