When the tag is decorated, carefully cut it out. Always use adult supervision with kids and scissors. Glue it to cardstock or poster for a thicker card, or you can use as is. Glue a popsicle stick to the back of the card so that it can easily be placed in your container garden creation!

HOW TO MAKE A CONTAINER GARDEN FOR MOM
STEP 1: SUPPLIES
You will need the following items to complete your creation:
- Plants for sun or shade – depending on where you will be displaying your container garden
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- Pottery from Calloway’s or Cornelius
- Calloway’s Natural Lawn & Garden Food or Calloway’s Premium Flower Food
STEP 2: ADD SOIL
Fill the container with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil. Select a container with proper drainage for moisture control to keep your plant’s roots healthy. After you add your plants and water thoroughly, add more soil if needed.
STEP 3: PLANT SELECTION
When selecting plants, remember to keep these details in mind:
- Where will the container garden be displayed?
- What are the sunlight requirements?
- What are the watering requirements?
When planting a container garden, it is always best to select plants with similar sun and water requirements in order to be successful!
For the perfect gift, use the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” method for a bright and dynamic display. This will help you create an interesting layout for your plants!
THRILLER PLANT
Option for Sun
Pentas are a great choice for gorgeous, sun-loving color and is the perfect “Thriller” plant for your container garden. They will dazzle in your container gardens with their showy corymbs of star-shaped flowers! Pentas are available in many colors and sizes to fit Mom’s style!
Option for Shade or Partial Sun
Coleus are low-maintenance annuals that love the shade! With heart-shaped leaves in a range of colors that also produce spikes of beautiful blooms. Choose a larger and colorful variety to really make a thrilling impact in your container garden!
FILLER PLANT
Option for Sun
For one of your “Filler” plant selections, use Cora® XDR Vincas. They are striking, showy, star-shaped flowers that provide strong, sun-loving color with glossy green oval leaves. Cora® XDR is great as a container filler or a colorful addition to flowerbeds.
Another “Filler” option for the sun are Zinnias. Zinnias produce daisy-like blooms from mid-spring through summer. Heat and drought tolerant, this plant is great for containers or as a cut flower in arrangements.
Option for Shade or Partial Sun
A “Filler” plant option that thrives in shady spots of your landscape, try Ambassador Begonias! This rich-green leaf series of Begonias is known for their early, large flowers on compact plants. They are wonderful performers in container gardens and flowerbeds and are heat-tolerant.
Another great option for the perfect “Filler” plants are Impreza™ Impatiens. These beauties are draped in stunning, colorful round flowers at the ends of the stems from mid spring to late summer. Its small pointy leaves remain green in color throughout the season.
SPILLER PLANT
Option for Sun
Choose plants with a trailing habit like Sweet Potato Vines for your “Spiller” plant selection. Sweet Potato Vines are a wonderful addition to gardens and containers, with their rich, heart-shaped leaves and gorgeous color.
Option for Shade or Partial Sun
For a shade or partial sun “Spiller” option, try the Bolivian Inch Plant! Bolivian Inch Plant* has ovate shaped leaves that are green on the surface and purple on the underside. It grows quickly and is best used as a groundcover or in a hanging basket and makes a beautiful container plant.
