Essential Gardening Tips for November & December

Welcome back. We are so honored that you have chosen to spend your time with us. 🌞We’ll be sharing some thoughts on how to make your November just as memorable as December. And since November is all about being mindful of those in our lives, we are reminded of how grateful we are for you. Your dedication to Calloway’s and Cornelius is something that we will never take for granted. So, sit back and let’s enjoy our time together.

Indeed – Thanksgiving does come before Christmas and with a visit to Calloway’s & Cornelius Nursery, you can satisfy your urge to prepare for both holidays at the same time. Your neighborhood stores are still receiving shrubs, trees, and houseplants that will satisfy your desire for autumn. All your favorite Christmas plants and décor are there to delight you!

With the soothing temperatures we’ve been having, you don’t want to rush through November. This month encapsulates all we love about fall with leaves crunching under our feet on a morning stroll. Sweaters are just enough to keep you warm and hot cider beckons. Staying in the moment will help rejuvenate ourselves and calm our spirits preparing us for the fun and enchantment of Christmas.

Sprucing up your landscape with new shrubs and trees is a big part of a gardener’s November schedule. The cooler, and thankfully milder temperatures, make it a pleasure to be outdoors planting these new additions. What would you like to add this year? How about Winter’s Snowman Camellia. The leaves are as enchanting as their petals. The new growth starts as a burgundy color that becomes glossy, dark green with time. All this accents the petals with their flush of pink color as a bud that opens to a snowy white semi-double flower. A semi-double Camellia means more of these lovely petals in each bloom.

We are all expecting family and friends for cozy gatherings; let’s get everything ready to greet them. Welcome everyone with a front porch dedicated to the blissful colors and textures of autumn. Begin by removing the Halloween items and replacing them with Matrix® Pansies, Petra Crotons, Celosia, and Ornamental Peppers – just to name a few.  Mix these in with your straw bales and pumpkins for a whole new feel. This color palette is ideal for Halloween, Autumn Harvest, and Thanksgiving.

Now let’s step inside and warm up your family rooms with some great houseplants to mark this time of year.

All the new plants on your front porch will look stunning inside as well. Complement the color of your plant selections with planters in warm hues. Pottery is a quick and easy way to transition from one holiday to the next simply by changing the color of your container. This is your chance to layer the textures, colors, heights and sizes to create areas of thoughtful visual interest. Add a few pinecones, acorns, and candles to complete the look. Embrace the feelings of warmth and tranquility with plants such as Peace Lily also know as Spathiphyllum and Prayer Plant or Calathea.  Even their names evoke a sense of calm. When it comes to indoor plants, get plenty of your favorites, plus a few as hostess gifts when you are spending your evenings at a friend’s home.

Prayer Plants get their name from the leaves, which stay flat during the day and then fold up like praying hands at night.

Set your table for Thanksgiving

Let’s focus on the dining room table where it all culminates in one delicious meal. Your pie pumpkins are great as place holders at each place setting or weave them into the overall design on your table. Since we are celebrating the harvest bounty, incorporate leaves and other plants as part of your table décor. This is a great way to add texture and fragrance. Add in fresh rosemary to stimulate your tastebuds! Remember, not all Thanksgiving tables need to be traditional, so this is a great time to express your gratitude in your own way.

Some gatherings will spill out to your patio so use the same approach as your front porch and fill it with the wonders of the season. Continue to use your pumpkins, gourds, and mums here as well for a cozy feel everyone will enjoy.

And speaking of things spilling over. You’ll notice that our stores are beginning to look a lot like Christmas! We’re making it easier than ever for you to get everything you need for Thanksgiving and Christmas at the same time. In addition to plants & décor, we have expanded our gift selection this holiday season. From durable garden tools to delightful accessories, our selection of unique gifts is great for every green thumb on your list. You can give a gift that lasts long after the wrapping paper is gone.

While Thanksgiving is such a sweet time of reflection, we are all excited about dipping into our Christmas decorations. So much to do, so much fun to have. Let’s get started and make it as easy as possible.

Your bales of straw that look so great with your pumpkins and mums can still be used on your front porch and patio by covering them with Christmas themed material. With this new backdrop you simply change out a few plants, add some personal touches, and you have begun the transformation. Your Petra Crotons and Celosia are still looking fabulous so use them somewhere else in your home where they are not center stage for a while.

Now is the time for all things Poinsettias!  It is the quintessential Christmas plant.  One simple touch and it makes everything merry and bright. Even with Poinsettias, you have choices in color and size. Classic red, stunning white, and Princettia® are wonderful as gifts because they are compact, a perfect size to display on side tables or under your tree.

…for Poinsettias.

You will love the assortment of  tabletop plants you will find in our stores this time of year.

Our adorable tabletop Leyland Cypress are so versatile throughout your home or outdoor spaces. Their feathery soft needles are rich green and as you can see, it looks just like a miniature tree!  Enjoy it as long as you want inside and then plant it outdoors so it can keep on growing.

It is never too early to start planning for your Christmas Tree since it is the center of all your holiday decorations. It sets the tone for everything else. We may still be drinking hot cider, but hot chocolate is beginning to win us over and we simply must turn on holiday music and welcome the Christmas tree into our home and the Christmas spirit into our hearts. While you are shopping, you may find that your cart is filled with Crotons and Mums, but you’re being tugged toward all those beautiful Christmas items – go ahead, lean into it. We won’t tell anyone.

Our Fresh Cut Trees will be ready set and ready for you by November 22! Sourced from some of America’s original family-owned farms, they come straight from the farm, into our stores. We go the extra mile with our fresh cut trees to keep them fresh – we cut the trunk again before setting it up in a water stand. Once home, keep that same stand filled to keep your tree soft and to help keep the needles in place. Our trees include the premium stand, with our compliments. If your dream tree is flocked, we have pieces of art waiting for you. If you have your own variety and size in mind, our trained team will flock the tree of your choice on site. You can choose between Fraser, Douglas, or Noble Fir of your choice, green, snowy flocked or snowy tipped. It’s just like asking Santa for what you want.

We are honored to help you with your holiday selections. You can rest easy knowing that Calloway’s and Cornelius has what you need so you can completely enjoy the full holiday season.
