Make sure it is large enough for your plant selections and then fill the pot with Calloway’s Premium Potting Soil. After you add your plants and water thoroughly, add more soil if needed!

STEP 3: PLANTS FOR POLLINATORS

sun loving plants

When selecting plants, remember to keep these few details in mind:

  • What are the sunlight requirements?
  • What are the watering requirements?
  • What pollinators do I want to attract?

For a container creation, it is best that all plants have similar sun and water requirements in order to be successful!

Then, choose your plants according to the different types of pollinators you want to attract to your yard.

When putting your container together, try to also use the “Thriller, Filler, Spiller” method for an always exciting color display.

For our creation, we chose a few different selections full of lush foliage and vibrant blooms! Here is what we selected:

zinnias

Petunias

The classic beauty and softness of a Petunia will never go out of style. Their stunning trumpet-shaped flowers add a sense of grace to any landscape. Available in many shades and colors, Petunias also attract hummingbirds and butterflies because of the nectar-producing capabilities and the inviting shape of their blooms.

Zinnias

Who doesn’t love a Zinnia? They come in a variety of boldly colored blooms with bright yellow centers. With daisy-like petals, these flowers add a dynamic and playful texture and will dazzle in any flowerbed or container. Butterflies and hummingbirds love Zinnias and are a fantastic choice for attracting these beautiful creatures to your yard!

Salvia

For the focal point in our display, we picked a vibrant and bright red Salvia! With masses of tubular flowers rising above the green foliage, this stunner loves the sunlight and is relatively low maintenance. Salvia is a fantastic choice for attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to your yard.

Lavender

Lavender has so many purposes and uses for you and your daily life. The fragrant scent actually works as a deterrent for mosquitoes while attracting butterflies to your yard. It will help create a fuller looking container creation with its delicate texture and foliage.

Other options:

Other great nectar-producing plants for annual color are Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Impatiens, Lantana, Marigold, Pentas, and more! Some perennial options are Coreopsis, Daylilies, Rudbeckia, and Yarrow, to name a few. Finally, a couple items that work as host-plant foilage for caterpillars are Dill, Fennel, Parsley, Canna, Ruellia, and Yaupon Holly. Check out our website to learn more about these plants!
