Crotons are easy-to-grow plants with bright tropical foliage. They are commonly grown as houseplants because they thrive in the warmth and humidity, but they can be displayed outdoors in a covered area through the fall. Crotons come in a variety of leaf shapes and colors. The leaves can vary from curly to thin, oval-shaped to twisted, always making for an exciting appearance. Petra Croton is the most popular variety, favored for its bold designs and variegated blends of red, yellow, and orange.

Creating a stunning indoor container garden with Crotons is easy. Start with soil selection and potting and use Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil for continued growth and healthy root development.

Once your Crotons are planted, display your creation around your home. Welcome guests with a Croton container garden in your entryway or add a splash of fall color to your sunny kitchen. Follow the proper placement and lighting guidelines and choose a location that receives an ample amount of bright, indirect light. Crotons need light to bring out their bold colors.

Avoid displaying your Petra Croton container garden near cold drafts or temperatures below 60 degrees. It thrives in 40-80% humidity and could drop some leaves if the levels are too low. Try running a humidifier or add a humidity tray beneath it if needed.

Croton Care Guide

croton and plant food

  • FERTILIZING GUIDELINES:

To keep your Crotons thriving, feed as directed with Calloway’s Premium Tropical Plant Food! Our special formula contains controlled-release nitrogen, Fx Iron®, calcium, and other key components to help your tropical plants have healthier growth while promoting new growth and bold foliage.

  • WATERING TECHNIQUES:

Keep the soil evenly moist and water when the top 2 inches of the soil is dry. They need about 1 inch of water per week during the summer. Watering can be reduced to bi-weekly during the winter. Mist frequently during growing seasons to maintain the humid environment that they crave.

  • LIGHT REQUIREMENTS:

Remember, Crotons need bright, indirect light or dappled sunlight to produce its spectrum of hues. If the plant turns green, it is getting insufficient light.
