Get your home and garden ready for the fall with the beautiful foliage of vibrant Crotons! The striking colors are gardening inspiration, adding a stylish touch to any space. You can create colorful garden displays on your patios or porches and elevate your home décor with texture and design. Discover the art of planting Crotons and unique ways to incorporate them into your space.
Crotons are easy-to-grow plants with bright tropical foliage. They are commonly grown as houseplants because they thrive in the warmth and humidity, but they can be displayed outdoors in a covered area through the fall. Crotons come in a variety of leaf shapes and colors. The leaves can vary from curly to thin, oval-shaped to twisted, always making for an exciting appearance. Petra Croton is the most popular variety, favored for its bold designs and variegated blends of red, yellow, and orange.
How to Display Crotons Indoors
There are many unique ways to incorporate Crotons into your home décor. Choosing the perfect Croton varieties for your space and selecting complementary pottery styles will help you create a stunning container garden and ignite your creativity. At Calloway’s and Cornelius, we have a vast collection of gorgeous pottery in a variety of designs, colors, and sizes for your home. Find the ideal pottery for your indoor plant styling and start growing!
Creating a stunning indoor container garden with Crotons is easy. Start with soil selection and potting and use Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil for continued growth and healthy root development.
Once your Crotons are planted, display your creation around your home. Welcome guests with a Croton container garden in your entryway or add a splash of fall color to your sunny kitchen. Follow the proper placement and lighting guidelines and choose a location that receives an ample amount of bright, indirect light. Crotons need light to bring out their bold colors.
Avoid displaying your Petra Croton container garden near cold drafts or temperatures below 60 degrees. It thrives in 40-80% humidity and could drop some leaves if the levels are too low. Try running a humidifier or add a humidity tray beneath it if needed.
Complete your indoor plant styling with tabletop Crotons. For table centerpiece ideas, pair 4-inch Crotons with classy ceramic pottery and decorative moss or pebbles.
Decorative moss and pebbles complete the look, tying everything together. Simply, cover the top of the soil completely with your choice of moss or your preferred color of pebbles or stones.
Add a nice table runner or place your tabletop crotons on an elegant tray and you will have a stunning early-fall centerpiece in no time! Plus, they are great pottery decorations for parties or family gatherings.

Fill your planters with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil, leaving room for your plants.
STEP TWO:
Next, try using the Thriller, Filler, Spiller method for creative container gardening. Try a fantastic yellow Croton in one planter. Then, for your other creation, place a Croton variety of your choice near the back of the container, to allow room for other plants. The Crotons will be the Thrillers or the focal point in your container gardens.
STEP THREE:
Now it is time to have some fun! Add your favorite fall-inspired foliage for extra color and texture. Try Asparagus Fern for your Spiller. The feathery leaves have a spreading growth that will gracefully spill over the edge of your container. Add one on each side of your Croton and place one in the middle for a cohesive look. Asparagus Fern is low maintenance with a beautiful bright green color.
Complete your Croton container garden with Coleus! The heart-shaped leaves and gorgeous spectrum of colors add an extra layer of autumn interest. Coleus plants are low-maintenance annuals that provide vibrant foliage to shady areas of your landscape, and they are a great choice for creating a stunning combination on your porches or patios. They will act as the Filler for a full look in your container garden.
STEP FOUR:
Once everything is planted, water in thoroughly and add more potting soil if needed. Place your new container gardens on your porch or patio for a fresh update to your home and garden!
Croton Care Guide
-
FERTILIZING GUIDELINES:
To keep your Crotons thriving, feed as directed with Calloway’s Premium Tropical Plant Food! Our special formula contains controlled-release nitrogen, Fx Iron®, calcium, and other key components to help your tropical plants have healthier growth while promoting new growth and bold foliage.
-
WATERING TECHNIQUES:
Keep the soil evenly moist and water when the top 2 inches of the soil is dry. They need about 1 inch of water per week during the summer. Watering can be reduced to bi-weekly during the winter. Mist frequently during growing seasons to maintain the humid environment that they crave.
-
LIGHT REQUIREMENTS:
Remember, Crotons need bright, indirect light or dappled sunlight to produce its spectrum of hues. If the plant turns green, it is getting insufficient light.
