ALL ABOUT OXALIS SHAMROCK
Oxalis Shamrock is the quintessential choice for St. Patrick’s Day. The symbolism and folklore surrounding the Oxalis Shamrock plant is based on their gorgeous clover-shaped leaves which some think brings good luck! The attractive leaves come in shades of green and purple with delicate flowers that bloom off and on throughout the year. The leaves fold up at night and open when the light returns.
There are different types of Oxalis Shamrock plants. Go green with the Oxalsi regnellii plant. This variety grows white blooms nearly year-round.
Oxalis triangularis is the lucky purple Shamrock variety, it produces lilac flowers from spring to fall.
There are many indoor and outdoor uses for Oxalis Shamrock plants. They thrive in brightly lit areas or on shady porches or patios. Watering and fertilizing Oxalis Shamrock plants is important to keep them happy and healthy. They should be watered when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch and fertilized monthly with Calloway’s Premium Tropical Plant Food. Also, they are self-cleaning so no-deadheading is necessary.

HOW-TO MAKE POTTERY O’ GOLD
SUPPLIES:
- Terra Cotta Pottery
- Oxalis Shamrock
- Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil
- White and Gold Spray Paint
- Gold Craft Paint
- Paint Bruch and Sponges
- Indoor Plants of Your Choice
- St. Patrick’s Day Décor
STEP ONE:
To get started, take your terra cotta pottery, and carefully cover each pot in white spray paint. They might need a couple coats for solid coverage. Allow the spray paint to dry completely.
STEP TWO:
Next, add the glorious gold! Why is gold a symbol of St. Patrick’s Day? According to Irish legends, if you catch a leprechaun, he is forced to tell you where he has hidden his pot of gold. Normally, the pot of gold is found at the end of the rainbow. Now it can be found in your home!
To add that touch of gold, you can go a couple different directions. You can cover your terra cotta in gold spray paint or use craft paint to create a decorative design.
Use a sponge to create gold dots on your pottery or use a paint brush for a more modern look. Use your creativity for a style that will suit your home and personality.
Once you have finished painting, allow everything to dry completely before adding your potting soil and plants.
STEP THREE:
Before adding the plants, fill your pottery with Calloway’s Premium Container Potting Soil for your gardening success. Add your Shamrocks and water in thoroughly.
STEP FOUR:
Finally, make your display look full and interesting with the addition of other houseplants and St. Patrick’s Day Décor.
Try Dracaena Dragon for its brightly colored leaves with mixed shades of green. Dracaena thrives indoors and it can also help purify the air in your home.
ZZ Plant is another fine choice to add to your display. The upright leaves will add an extra layer of dimension while complementing the color scheme. ZZ Plants are popular for its ability to tolerate a wide range of conditions and they are great in low light areas.
For an easy option, explore our selection of pre-planted Succulents and Cacti available in beautiful decorative planters. They are great for gifting to your friends and family too!
Complete your tabletop display with your favorite St. Patrick’s Day décor! Try adding decorative picks or plant in mini-St. Patrick’s Day cauldrons.
Remember, if you are planting in a container without a drain hole, add some pebbles or stones to the bottom. This will help prevent soggy roots and allow the water to drain through the soil effectively.
DECORATE YOUR PORCHES OR PATIOS
Enjoy the outdoors and give your porches and patios some love with Shamrocks. Growing Shamrock plants outside is another way you can enjoy them. The ideal growing conditions for Oxalis Shamrock plants outdoors is light shade throughout the day, making your porches or patios an ideal location to display your St. Patrick’s Day creations!
There are many different plants that you can pair in combinations with Shamrocks. The most important rule is they should have similar sun and water requirements. Here are a couple ideas for a full foliage look and a design with shade-loving blooms!
FULL FOLIAGE CREATION
Use your gold painted pottery and fill it with Calloway’s Potting Soil, one of the best soils for Shamrocks!
Add the Oxalis regnellii plant, the green variety, towards the back of the pottery.
Then, fill in the front area with the green and gold hues of Coleus. Coleus are low-maintenance annuals that love the shade. They are compact and bushy to create the ultimate full foliage look.
SHADE-LOVING BLOOMS
For this creation, try using an iconic green pot for the holiday. Add your potting soil and accompany your creation with a purple Shamrock.
Fill the empty areas with shade-loving blooms like Ambassador Begonias. Ambassador Begonias are known for their rich green leaves and abundant flowers. Try white blooms for extra contrast.
Impatiens are another great option for shady gardens. Impatiens are draped in stunning flowers with small pointy leaves. They are fast-growing with a mounding habit.
