Sweet Onions have less sulfur and a higher water content than other varieties. This makes for a mild, smooth, tasting onion where the sweetness is not overpowered. Add to recipes for a balanced meal.
Growing 8"-10" tall, these Sweet Onions will make a great addition in either raised beds or pots with a drainage system. They’re harvested in mid-summer and are easy to control. They are also cold hardy down to 20 degrees but should still be covered with frost cloth during those cool winter days for protection.
Sweet Onions prefer full to part sun and do best in fertile, organic, moist soil. Plant below the ground so the roots and quarter inch of the bulb are covered. Place a thin layer of organic compost and soil for better results. When the tops fall over, it is time to harvest. After they are pulled, leave them lying in the garden for two days to dry. Next, remove the tops and roots and let them continue to cure in an airy, dry place.
